Machine Overview
The vehicle pictured is the legendary Yamaha Banshee 350 (YFZ350), a high-performance sport all-terrain vehicle (ATV) widely recognized as one of the most iconic, aggressive, and collectible machines in powersports history. Originally introduced in 1987 and retaining its core architecture until global production ceased in 2012, the Banshee carved out a unique legacy as a purebred, no-compromise speed machine built primarily for sand dunes, drag strips, and open trail riding.
Engine and Powertrain Architecture
At the absolute heart of the Banshee’s identity is its power plant: a 347cc liquid-cooled, parallel-twin, two-stroke engine. This motor was originally derived from Yamaha’s street-legal RD350 and RZ350 motorcycles. Feeding this twin-cylinder setup are dual 26mm Mikuni carburetors that require a precise mix of gasoline and two-stroke oil (pre-mix).
Unlike modern four-stroke ATVs that provide smooth, linear power across the RPM range, the Banshee is famous for its distinct two-stroke "powerband." At low RPMs, the machine produces modest power, but as the engine winds up, it hits a dramatic surge of horsepower and torque that requires skill and active clutch management to control. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a heavy-duty chain drive hooked to a crisp, 6-speed manual transmission with a manual clutch.
